2011 - Field Left fallow
In 2011 we are leaving the field fallow, thanks to chemical donations from Monsanto and Viterra. We will continue with further third-world support with a new crop in 2012.
Hail knocked about 20% of the pods out. Unfortunately this was our first year not to carry hail insurance.
2012 - Harvest
Thanks to the hail, we had to run the combine low to scoop the lentils out of the dirt. This caused us to break several teeth in our combine and eventually we broke the entire assembly. Fortunately Wayne Sparks (above) came to the rescue.
Combining Delayed
In 2010 the rain delayed harvest until October when the weather got nice, but the days were short. The morning and evening humidity, combined with the lodging of the crop, caused our combine to plug. We had to repeatedly shut down the combine to pull wads of straw from the auger and feeder.
Geese
This years crop was swathed early because rain had caused it to fall. A long period of rain afterwards degraded the quality to cattle feed, and exposed it to thousands of geese which inundated the region this year.
